ANNUAL
MEETING REPORT
Once
again there was plenty of food at the potluck, so not one of the 50
attendees went hungry. Being well fed makes any meeting a success.
We were pleased that City Councilmembers Charles Djou and Gary Okina
also attended. Four other Council members had sent their regrets.
The Treasurer indicated that we had an income of $2,861.90 and expenses
of $5,273.04 to give a balance of $7,435.43. Larry Winnik presented
President Norris with a check of $312 from the sale of his CD's in
the Gift Shop.
President John Norris indicated that 2003 was a good year overall
for the FOHB. With the new facilities in place, we are now looking
to the future. Highlights for the year include: Members (1) testifying
for the increase of the fee to $5 and against the move to shift the
concession fees from the Bay, (2) developing an award application
to the Smithsonian Magazine (turned down), (3) conducting quarterly
cleanups of the Bay and Hwy, (4) awarding a research travel grant
to Ms. Ling Ong to study techniques being used to track Parrotfish
that can be used in the Bay, (5) financing the newly designed T-shirts
for the HBEP Volunteers, (6) assisting in the testimony on the evaluation
of the HBEP program, (7) supporting the Thursday Night lecture and
film series, (8) adding Cynthia Bond and Bryn Kaufman to the Board
with David Livingston and Geoffrey Haywood leaving, (9) developing
the beautiful and new FOHB Website, and (10) reexamining the Mission
Statement and goals of the FOHB. The Board pledges to continue to
work to the support of the Bay and the education of the public.
The following were elected to the Board for 2004-2005 on motion: Laurel
Anderson, Cynthia Bond, Bryn Kaufman and Barbara Nowak.

Are
You Looking at Me?
While
"cruising" the reed flats just a wee bit into the outer
reef recently I saw some seriously unusual behavior exhibited between
a couple of Redlip Parrotfish. They caught my attention (Not any easy
thing to do to a mature snorkeler who is off-times literally "zoned-out"
in Zone 2!) because of their antics.
A
"terminal phase" Redlip was chasing an "initial phase"
member and every so often the "chase" would stop and both
critters would initiate a stare-down contest, nose-to-nose, while
occasionally shaking their respective heads three times in quick succession.
They would do this for 15-seconds and then the chase would continue
once again only to be terminated in a subsequent stare-down and head
shaking routine.
As
I am wont to do, I couldn't help reflect on their aberrant (to me)
behavior and wonder how it would play out in a homo sapiens erectus
world. Assuming that their activity had a basis in a two-guy one-girl
scenario or alternatively in establishing who was more macho, I could
picture a mid-20's studly guy, looking for love in all the right places,
walking into a "club" and doing the nose-to-nose head shake
routine with his competition to win the heart of a lady at the bar.
No fist fights, no wrestling match, no small arms fire, just some
close-in head shaking while staring down your opponent.
I decided to test out my theory with a buddy at my last poker game.
Trying to bluff him during a hand of "Texas hold 'em (I had 3,7),
I stared at him and shook my head violently to the left and right!
Seeing that we were otherwise engaged, one of the other poker players
raked in the "pot." I suspect that the same thing happens
in the fish world as well. A couple of male fish "duke"
it out with the stare and head shake routine and an opportunistic
third fish steals the lady! Oh yeah! My neck brace comes off next
Thursday! Aloha to all, Larry Winnik
FOHB
WEBSITE
Features
of the Website now include: (1) Information on the purpose of the
FOHB, (2) Information on the history of the FOHB, (3) Read about research
the FOHB has sponsored, (4) A copy of this Newsletter, (5) A listing
of Current Events of the Bay, (6) A Membership Sign-up Form, (7) Links
to other Websites of interest and (8) a contact page with the e-mail
address of all the Board Members. This latter information will facilitate
your contacting a Board Member regarding any special concern.
A new feature that we are working on is the ability to take donations
and yearly dues on-line via a credit card! Our Website has already
helped to prompt a generous gift for a Membership for a couple here
from a couple on the Mainland! We are looking at the possibility of
selling items from our Website as well.
Our Website will continually be updated and improved as we move forward.
It will serve as a central place for everyone to get information about
the FOHB. If you have any suggestions, contact Bryn Kaufman at bryn@bwkc.com.
Bay and Hwy Cleanup
Sixty
persons turned out for the cleanup at the Bay and Highway on Sunday,
January 18. A good turnout from just the notice in the newspapers.
Mahalo to everyone that came out and supported the FOHB!
The next cleanup will be in April, and that will be a nationwide effort.
BAY
EDUCATION PROGRAM
We
have spent a full year in the new Education Facility and we still
love it!
Now
2003 in Review!
The
HBEP now has a program every Thursday night-videos, films or speakers
on current marine related topics; we trained 51 new Volunteers to
give >100 of them; the Volunteers donated over 12,800 hours, and
increase of 1,100 over 2002; approximately 340 Education Tour groups,
with about 10,000 participants came to the Bay last year, a 50% increase
over 2002; we hosted distinguished groups from Indonesia, People's
Republic of China and Brazil as well as the President of Taiwan; we
added our Outreach Coordinator Dr. Valerie Franck and part-time Program
Assistants Malealani Kaneshiro and Paulo Maurin to our Staff; we ran
a joint program with the Waikiki Aquarium this past summer; we said
goodbye to Jeffrey Kuwabara, Kimberly Artita and Wendy Baucham, we
are still working on our contract with the City for 2003-2004; and
it has been wonderful working with the FOHB this past year.
