Vol. 13, #6, November 2004

ENTERTAINMENT: The Board plans to have another great speaker scheduled, but the person is not identified at this time. An e-mail will be sent to the members when the speaker is known. It is also possible that President John Norris will "crack" at least one joke for entertainment also.

The FOHB Board, as in past years, has voted to allow attendees to prepay their 2005 dues. Thus, bring your checkbooks and take advantage of our thoughtfulness and your efforts to keep the Friends going. Oh yes, if you paid your dues via the give aloha program, show your receipt or tell Laurel Anderson of your donation.

The Board is planning to nominate Fran Gabrielli, Roy Gritter, and John Norris for re-election to the Board for two years. We need two additional persons to complete our current Board size. If you are interested in being a Board Member, please contact Laurel Anderson at 263-3056 or laurel@hawaii.rr.com by Wednesday, December 1.

Remember, any FOHB member or potential member is welcome at any Board meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at TransPacific Hawaii College at 5:45 pm.

AN ANIMATED TALE

My wife and I are inveterate (No, that does not make us inverts!) moviegoers and over the last six months I've developed a special fascination and appreciation for the animated flicks such as "Finding Nemo" and more recently "A Shark's Tale."

I have been treating the marine world's inhabitants as people in my "Dailies from the Bay" for a couple of years now (For the uninitiated, the "Dailies" comprise my best photos complete with humorous, normally humanistic, captions.) and it's pure pleasure to see the concept make the leap to the big screen.

"A Shark's Tale" has gone outta its way to humanize the cast of characters right on down to the black mole thingy on the face of the Godfather Shark character voiced by Robert De Nero. If you have not seen it, check it out! Hmm, where am I going with all this?

Oh yeah, I can just imagine a place, far far away, in another universe, in another time, where an evolutionary belch results in the marine world being top dog on the planet. Here, homo sapiens are relegated to being placed in land aquariums (err, zoos) and the movie-going piscine public gets to see such animated blockbusters as "Finding Irving" and "A Sapiens Tale." Or maybe "Gone With the Tide."

Hey! Why not? Space (Not unlike my mind) knows no bounds and anything could be 'brewing' out there! I'm a bit curious, however. If the marine voiceover star of "A Sapiens Tale" has a mole in real life (like De Niro), will it make the transition to the animated big screen blockbuster? Hmm, I wonder! For those of you who would like to subscribe to my 'Dailies,' which come out a couple of times a week (Hey, I know what your thinking, don't ask!), simply e-mail me at LWProductions@hawaii.rr.com. It's free and I use a BCC address element to keep your address private.

Aloha, as always, Larry Winnik

As a reminder, Larry Winnik has produced a CD with 176 of his best pictures of the marine life of the Bay. It can be purchased at the Gift Shop at the Bay or via the FOHB Website. It would be a great Holiday Gift.

BOARD MEETING

The results from the continued contacts with City Budget Director Lui-Kwan by members of the Board has resulted in his approving the hiring of another Park Ranger, a half-time Groundskeeper and some of the equipment needed by the Bay. President Norris of the FOHB subsequently prepared a letter to Director Lui-Kwan, with input from a wide variety of interested parties, that thanked him for his approval of the additional needs, but also added a list of other critical items that are needed for the proper operations of and to protect the Bay.

Alan Hong reported that, Parks and Recreation Dept. Director Balfour approved the purchase of a P.A. System, a Security System and two Projectors out of the Parks General Budget for the Bay with the plan that the H.B. Fund pay back the monies in new Budget year. Also, that a survey is being made of the video viewers for a planned update of the film in 2005.

Oktoberfest

The Koko Marina Center Oktoberfest event was a great success, thanks in part to our generous reliable Volunteers. They reported having a good time selling script and tickets, serving food, pouring beer, checking ID's and doing whatever the Event Coordinators asked. The German food from Swiss Haus was delicious, folks danced to the "oom-pa-pa" music by Simplicity and revelers went home with souvenir glasses and hats.
Mahalo to all the Volunteers listed below and to Koko Marina Center for choosing the Friends as beneficiary. A tentative accounting shows proceeds of approximately $2,500 going to the FOHB! Watch for the Second Annual Koko Marina Oktoberfest in 2005!
The Volunteers were: Aldene Agpaoa, Laurel Anerson, Kate Arizo, Jennifer Barrett, Cynthia Bond (FOHB Coordinator), Helga Boettger, Sharon Ellis, Nicole Fortin, Bob Fowler, Theresa Fowler, Bob Graham, Carrie Graham, Dave Graham, Liz Graham, Shayne Gipe, Roy Gritter, William Gutguten, Alan Hong, Nancy Inouye, Bryn Kaufman, Ning Kaufman, Bob Kern, Adrienne King, Kapua Lee, Susie Lewis, Rose Meece, John Norris, Andrea Novak, Barbara Nowak, Jack Oehrlein, Ling Ong, Sheryl Pang, Shun Pactanac, Stephen Pauelua, Jeff pfeil, Jon Priest, Harvey Shapiro, Micki Stash, Tom TinHan, Babs Tupper, Elli Winnik, Larry Winnik and Steve Wright.

BAY EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

The Volunteer Training in October resulted in a large number of persons that the Friends could welcome if and when they meet them.

They include: Tiffany Masura, John Quitoriano, Lorenzo Tingson, Carolyn Hilton, Nancy Maquire, Mike Cordeiro, Earl Kidder, Allison Goldman, Nick Muszynski, Alexis Muller, Adam LeFebvre, John Uyesugi, Harry Blanchette, Shodai Nishitori, Yuki Takahashi, Asuka Mitani, Noriko Sakakibars and Masashi Takaragi. Also welcome back after extended absences: Rosa Chiang, Julia Morgan, Jennifer Bethel and Chris LeFebvre.

Snowbirds that have arrive to date include Wayne Wheeler, Vic and Marie Cole and Murray Walker.

Saturday Schedule

So you know, the Bay is now open only on the second (2nd) Saturday of the winter months until 10:00 pm. Too few visitors come for any more open evenings.

For the last time in this series the familiar logo heads this column. This ends the sixth year that we can report how much the FOHB Members donated via the Foodland/Sack-N-Save Matching Gifts Program. A total of $546 was donated as 2005 dues and gifts in September. Foodland in turn added $107.97 and Western Union $107.06 to the contributions to give a total of $761.03!
This total can be compared to the 2004 total of $149.47 as dues and contributions. Nineteen Friends used this important means. We know that some members might have "missed the boat," but the increase from five indicated was great.
As you know, if you did donate by means of this program, Foodland does not give the names. We have learned of some of the donators, for they contacted Roy Gritter or Laurel Anderson, but you can still do so. That way you name will have at least one star (*) after it when you receive your copy of the six Newsletters published by the Friends yearly.
